Events: AUTHORS APPEARANCE: Contributors to Women on the Edge; Saturday, January 14, 7 pm; Free. Women on the Edge is an anthology of writings from Southern California writers. It has been heralded by Kirkus Reviews as "brash, thoughtful, intelligent and sassy," and by Homeslice Reviews as "a Whitman's Sampler of literary delights" and "a stellar collection of stories by women whose voices deserve to be heard and at peak volume." Join us for a joint reading by contributors to Women on the Edge and members of San Diego Writers Ink (SDWI). AUTHORS APPEARANCE: Margaret Radcliffe and Edie Eckman, Friday, January 20, 6-9pm; Free. Meet the authors of The Knitting Answer Book and The Crochet Answer Book. In their books, these experts leave no question unanswered, no quandry unaddressed. They will be at the Grove to answer any knitting or crochet question you may have, and of course, to sign their books. Each book contains detailed, illustrated answers to literally hundreds of questions, from the common to the more unusual. CLASSES & Workshops: Materials provided only where indicated. Brown Bag Writing Practice Group: Every Tuesday, 12-1 pm; Fee: $5. Given prompts, practice all types of writing free from editing or critique. Just drop in prepared to write. No experience necessary. Contact Amy Wallen at amylizwrites@hotmail.com or Jill Hall at jillghall@aol.com for additional information. Knit Salon: First & Third Thursdays, January 5 & 19, 6:30-9:00 pm; Free. Drop in anytime and join fellow knitters and crocheters for an evening of creativity in the cozy atmosphere of the Grove. No instructions offered but yarn selection advice is available. SWEATER WORKSHOP: Sundays, January 8 & 15, February 5 & 26, and March 19; 11am-4pm; Class Fee: $125. Dave Kraft will teach this “must take” workshop for all those wishing to learn how to make a sweater, from determining the fit and gauge to shaping armholes and necklines to sewing seams and blocking. We’ll work from one simple v-neck pattern included in the cost of the class. Register today, as this workshop will fill quickly! CROCHET HAT: Sundays, January 8 & 15, 11am-4pm, Class Fee: $40. Taught by Melody Hufford, this popular class is being offered again for beginner crocheters. Must see store samples!!! KNIT A SCARF CLASS: Wednesdays, Jan. 11 & 18, 6:30pm-9pm; or, Sundays, Jan. 21 & 28, 11am-1pm. Class Fee: $40. Start the New Year off by learning a new skill. During this 2-session class, you will learn to select yarns with compatible needles, work a gauge, and knit a scarf. Session 2 will be devoted to finishing techniques including fringing! MAGICAL MOBIUS FELTED PURSE: Sundays, January 15 & 22, 10am-5pm; Class Fee: $100. If you can knit and purl, you can make one of these artistic bags. Learn the moebius cast on and an appropriate bind-off, how to create openings with waste yarn and introduce some playful elements into your unique purse. The class ends with a discussion on the felting process, which produces the sturdy fabric of a felted purse. Must see store samples or marciadecoster.org.! COMBINATION KNITTING by Annie Modesitt: Thursday, January 19, 7-9 pm; Fee: $25. Easy to learn and quick to execute, this method is a combination of the Western or German/American/English style of knitting and Eastern/Islamic knitting. Easier and quicker than traditional Western knitting, this method creates a very even tension with less "rowing out" and less wrist strain. Annie Modesitt is also the author of Confessions of a Knitting Heretic and we’ll have plenty of copies on hand for her to sign. Don’t miss this special event!!! Crochet Granny Squares II: Sunday, January 29, 11am-4pm; Class Fee: $25. For those crocheters who attended Melody Hufford’s first Granny Square class and want further instruction. CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event the Grove needs to cancel a class due to lack of participants, the Grove will issue a full refund. Participants who are unable to attend as planned, must notify the Grove within five days of the class in order to receive a refund. Otherwise the class fee is forfeited. Fees cannot be applied to future classes. |
